We are delighted and honoured that Soho Theatre’s work with artists of South Asian heritage from across the world has been recognised in the prestigious Asian Media Awards 2024.
The Awards highlighted the explosion of Indian talent, that we have championed artists with South Asian roots over many years, our work in schools and particularly the impact that we have made in showcasing Indian and South Asian comedians at Soho Theatre, at Edinburgh Festival Fringe and on tour.
Our Executive Director Mark Godfrey said: ‘We’re thrilled and fortunate to be able to play a part in connecting UK audiences to incredible South Asian artists from across the world. To receive an Asian Media Award, recognising the work of those artists and Soho Theatre’s team is a real honour.’
Our friends at Dishoom hosted a celebratory breakfast for some of the wider Soho Theatre India team to celebrate with Anirban Dasgupta and Biswa Kaylan Rath, two of the very many artists who represent that explosion of talent, and who we are proud to present. Anirban Dasgupta’s current run at Soho Theatre began headlining our Comedy Tent at Diwali on the Square in Trafalgar Square (27 Oct) – featuring Nayonica Ghosh, Joshua Bethania, Seeta Wrightson and Rohan Sharma – before performing his show Polite Provocation in our Upstairs venue to critical acclaim. Biswa Kalyan Rath begins his three week run of brand new show Hinglish & Engdi at Dean Street (1 Nov), a week early to accommodate demand.
Looking ahead and alongside year-round South Asian work at Dean Street, we are presenting work in Mumbai and Benguluru this December and January, and some of the biggest South Asian names next year in our 1,000 capacity Soho Theatre Walthamstow, opening 2025. Details to be announced.
