‘Problem?’

A witch-like agony aunt, armed with a bronze leg and a tiny handbell, peers out into the audience, asking for their innermost secrets, desires, worries. A few moments later– perhaps via a visit to the stage, perhaps after a soul baring conversation, or maybe with help from some other audience member– their problems are no more.

At the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe, Estonian clown Julia Masli launched an under-the-radar work in progress show. It was on at midnight; no press were invited; the idea was to solve people’s problems. What happened next is already legendary. Ha HaHaHaHaHaHa,asit was called, became the biggest talking-point of the festival and earned a nomination for Best Show award. Her first four-week run at the Soho Theatre sold out completely. After causing a storm at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival– where she again came away with a Best Show nomination– Julia turned her magic wand onto the United States, selling out seasons in New York (off-Broadway), Los Angeles and Washington DC.

Less than eighteen months after it all began, she is well on the way to ending all the world’s woes and collecting a Nobel Peace Prize. But before all that, there’s one more chance to see her as she brings her tiny handbell and bronze leg back to Soho. A unique, bewitching performer, Julia Masli has created a genre-defying show: a heady brew of participation, soundscapes, quickfire improv and pure, glorious chaos. While struggling to describe exactly what they saw, audiences and critics on three continents have been unanimous in raving about
this unique experience. Now, she returns to London to heal and terrify us all over again.
