A decade ago, Joseph discovered something in a car boot sale. Something old, something ordinary, something mundane. But all is not as it seems. Is it ever? In Highlander 70, “the UK’s foremost alchemist of “found” comedy and irreverent, cross-media mash-up humour” (Scotsman) excavates the past and brings the audience along for the ride, with the help of some physical media, animation… and, of course, the good folks at Jim’s Steak and Spaghetti House.
Joseph Morpurgo is an award-winning writer and comedian. Since debuting at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013 with his breakout hit Truthmouth, he has gone on to create the boundary-stretching, convention-flouting and hugely acclaimed comedy shows Odessa (2014), Soothing Sounds For Baby (2015) and Hammerhead (2017). He is also a founder member of improv show Austentatious – one of the UK’s biggest and best known improv shows, currently resident in London’s West End.
Outside of his live work, his broadcast credits include Harry and Paul’s Story of the 2s (BBC2), Murder in Successville (BBC3), and Drunk History (Comedy Central). He was Lead Writer on the preschool series Ready Eddie Go, and has written on multiple Aardman projects, including the International Emmy Kids winner Shaun The Sheep: Adventures From Mossy Bottom. He co-created Radio 4 series The Ultimate Choice; wrote and starred in his own show, Joseph Morpurgo’s Walking Tour; and has worked with Warp Films, Baby Cow, Blink, Fudge Park, and more.
Highlander 70 is directed by Hamish MacDougall (Buffy Revamped; Joseph Morpurgo: Soothing Sounds For Baby; Joseph Morpurgo: Hammerhead), and produced by Owen Donovan for Berk’s Nest (West End: Nick Mohammed’s A Christmas Carol (ish), Fringe/Off West End: Cat Cohen: Broad Strokes: Rose Matafeo: Horndog; Richard Gadd: Monkey See Monkey Do; Kieran Hodgson: Big In Scotland; Nick Mohammed is Mr. Swallow: Show Pony). Further Creative Team to be announced.
