Welcome to Soho Theatre. We are a charity and social enterprise, driven by a passion for the work we produce, the artists we work with and the audiences we attract.

Our history dates back to our roots in the early 1970s as Soho Poly. A small but influential fringe theatre Soho Poly was radical and relevant, capturing the excitement and innovation of its time. After our venue closed in 1990, we went through several different incarnations before finding and opening our new home Soho Theatre in March 2000.

Bang in the heart of London’s West End we have a festival-like programme and busy bar. (When we’re not in lockdown) you’ll also find us at festivals, through our national and international touring and (right now) on Soho Theatre On Demand.

We pursue creative excellence, harnessing the artistic spirit based in our new writing roots, inclusivity and being welcome to all. Our work takes many forms. We draw on the radical ethos of the fringe and the traditions of punk culture and queer performance. We champion voices that challenge from outside of the mainstream, and sometimes from within it too.

We produce and co-produce new plays, work with associate artists and present the best new emerging theatre companies. We present the early work of countless UK artists (many who become industry giants). And we are the go to for many international artists’ London debuts. We have artists on attachment and under commission (Soho Six). Plus we have a thriving variety of artist and talent development programmes.

We have two Awards: our prestigious biennial writing competition the Verity Bargate Award, and the Tony Craze Award for our Writers’ Labs participants. We read and see hundreds of shows a year and we work in local boroughs.

And, we’re expanding, into an additional 1,000 seat venue in Walthamstow, set to open in 2022.
