Have you ever wondered how your favourite performers take their shows from a blank page in a notebook to a packed room in stitches?
At Soho Theatre we are delighted to bring you the third in our series of one day masterclasses taking place over Zoom featuring some of the top performers working in the industry today.
Each performer will be looking back at their previous shows to take you step by step through their creative process. From developing the idea, to performing on the opening night and beyond, they will be letting you in on their secrets.
Spencer Jones – Thursday 12th November
King of loop-pedal, clowning, DIY puppeteering, stand-up, nonsense comedy, Spencer Jones has moved from cult favourite to household name (The Mind of Herbert Clunkerdunk, Mister Winner) in recent years and our first workshop of the season lets you in to his rather unique mind.
2019’s The Things We Leave Behind saw him claim his first Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination for Best Show and in his Masterclass he will show you how he creates work that is as irreverent as it is personal and tender.
Kiri Pritchard-McLean – Wednesday 18th November
Kiri Pritchard-McLean never shies away from a tough topic, with previous shows seeing her tackle structural racism, sexism, child grooming, adoption and emotional abuse. Her bold willingness to take on the thorniest of subject matter has seen her nominated for multiple awards and lead to her making appearances on pretty much every comedy TV show you can name.
In this Masterclass, you will have the opportunity to see how she finds the humour in almost any topic and follow her process of taking those topics and creating critically acclaimed, sell out hours.
Ahir Shah – Thursday 26th November
A stand-up for whom the phrase ‘the personal is political’ is almost an individual mission statement, Edinburgh Comedy Award nominated Ahir Shah has been making shows for nearly a decade.
An audience and reviewer favourite and now with a constellation of stars next to his name, Ahir’s Masterclass will show you how his sharp, intellectual brand of stand-up is able to blend philosophical inquiry and political vigour with plenty of sweet gags.
Lucy McCormick – Wednesday 2nd December
Creator of the total sell out shows Triple Threat and Post Popular, Lucy McCormick takes genre-smashing to a whole new level. She’s made her name with and garnered huge critical acclaim for her frenetic, filthy concoctions of dance, song, absurdist art and minor breakdowns. Now she’s opening the doors and letting you in on her secrets.
Through this Masterclass, she will detail how she works with her regular collaborators in building her shows and outline how she’s taken her grungy, basement, performance art vibe to the Fringe and theatres all over the country.
Places on the masterclasses cost £50 and are strictly limited to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to ask questions and learn as much as possible in a more intimate online setting.
