Have you ever wondered how your favourite performers take their shows from a blank page in a notebook to a packed room in stitches?
At Soho Theatre we are delighted to bring you the second series of our one day masterclasses taking place over Zoom featuring some of the top performers working in the industry today.
Each performer will be looking back at their previous shows to take you step by step through their creative process. From developing the idea, to performing on the opening night and beyond, they will be letting you in on their secrets.
Josie Long – Thu 18 Mar
Often described as a unique voice in comedy, Josie is one of the most respected comedians of her generation. She started stand-up at age 14 and went on to win the BBC New Comedy Award. She has continued to perform stand-up around the world and her eighth solo stand-up show, Something Better, had a sell-out two weeks at Soho Theatre followed by a two-week run at the Barrow Street Theatre New York. Josie has been nominated for the coveted Best Show award at the Edinburgh Fringe three times. On TV and radio, Josie has appeared on The News Quiz, Just A Minute, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Skins, 8 out of 10 Cats, and Drunk History.
Max and Ivan – Thu 25 Mar
Max & Ivan are a globally acclaimed comedy double-act, who have performed their intricate multi-character live shows at SXSW festival, the Adelaide Fringe, the Edinburgh Fringe, and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, as well as on tour throughout the UK and numerous sold out runs at Soho Theatre.
They produce large scale events for festivals, write for radio and TV and have appeared in all your favourite TV shows (providing your favourite shows are W1A, Peep Show and Drunk Histories).
Felicity Ward – Thu 1 Apr
Felicity Ward is a multi-award winning comedian, actor and writer who has toured her award-winning, sell-out shows across the world, winning hearts of audiences and critics everywhere she goes. She was handpicked by the BBC in 2015 as one of the new faces of UK comedy starring in her own Live From The BBC special – the only Australian selected to be part of this new comedy series. She is a regular face on many other international TV shows including Russell Howard’s Good News, Alan Davies’ As Yet Untitled, The John Bishop Show and Mock the Week.
In 2018, Felicity taped her first Live At The Apollo Special and smashed through a sold out Edinburgh Fringe Festival season in her brand new show ‘Felicity Ward: Busting a Nut‘. The show was nominated for the most prestigious comedy award there is: Best Comedy at Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Nick Helm – Thu 8 Apr
Nick Helm first took to the stand-up comedy stage in 2007 and quickly became a circuit legend with his tour de force of one-liners, stories, poems and jokes. Since then, he’s become one of Britain’s most loved comedians for his multiple, memorable and moving television appearances, his critically acclaimed writing and his legendary rollercoaster live shows.
Across the years, Nick has taken multiple mega hit shows to the Edinburgh Fringe including the must-see Keep Hold of the Gold, the Fosters Edinburgh Comedy Award nominated Dare to Dream and the completely sold out This Means War. In 2017, he embarked on his first full tour, hitting 25 dates across the UK with his hilarious show There Is Nothing You Can Do To Me That I Haven’t Already Done To Myself. He also released two successful albums Nick Helm is F*cking Amazing and Hot ‘n’ Heavy, which feature hit songs from his solo shows and are available on iTunes and Bandcamp.
Nick has become a firm TV favourite having appeared on multiple shows both acting and as himself. He was nominated for a Royal Television Society Award for his starring role in critically acclaimed BBC Three sitcom, Uncle, and also played the adorable Watto is Channel 4’s Loaded which was later broadcast on AMC in America. He’s also fronted his own food travelogue show Eat Your Heart Out with Nick Helm on Dave and his own high-octane variety show Nick Helm’s Heavy Entertainment on BBC Three. This is all in addition to his other unforgettable TV appearances such as 8 Out of 10 Cats, Russell Howard’s Good News and Celebrity Mastermind.
Doctor Brown – Thu 15 Apr & Wed 28 Apr (starting 6pm)
Dr Brown is the absurd comic persona created by comedian and actor Phil Burgers. Burgers as Brown has won numerous awards for his live performances, including Best Comedy Show at both the Edinburgh and Melbourne International Festival Awards. Dr Brown has sold out multiple runs at Soho Theatre and internationally and also directed Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer winning show Laid starring Natalie Palamides.
Sophie Duker – Thu 29 Apr
Sophie Duker is a comedian and writer whose favourite things include breaking hearts, taking names and telling jokes with the confidence of a cis straight middle-class white man. Her Edinburgh Fringe Show, Venus, saw her nominated for the Best Newcomer award and gained critical acclaim and five star reviews. The success of this show saw her performing a sold out two week run at Soho Theatre.
Sophie has appeared on 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown (Channel 4), 8 Out of 10 Cats (E4), Mock the Week (BBC2), Don’t hate the Playaz (ITV2), Dave Gorman’s Terms and Conditions Apply (Dave) and Frankie Boyle’s New World Order (BBC2). She can also be seen on in Riot Girls (Channel 4), Quickies (BBC3) and Roast Battle (Comedy Central).
Sophie is also the host of the monthly comedy night, Wacky Racists Comedy Club and the host of the official TV companion podcast to I May Destroy You, ‘Obsessed With… I May Destroy You’ on BBC Sounds.
Places on the masterclasses cost £50 and are strictly limited to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to ask questions and learn as much as possible in a more intimate online setting.
