If you live or work in Waltham Forest and are thinking of stepping into the spotlight for the first time as a stand-up, you’ll need our Comedy Lab Stand Up Lab.
Welcome! If you’re new to Soho Theatre, we’re London’s most vibrant producer of new theatre, comedy and cabaret. Alongside our live performance programme, behind the scenes we’ve always run masterclasses, workshops and labs. Led by working theatre professionals, writers, comedians and members of our Creative team, our courses are a chance to discover and develop people who want to learn and enhance their skills. All of our courses are 18+ and have no upper age limit – that is of course unless you’ve been a part of our Young Playwrights programme for school age children (we’ve run a few in Waltham Forest over the years).
Waltham Forest Stand Up Lab course
Our 9-week Stand Up Comedy course will help you find your comedic voice, take you through exercises and games to generate material, hone your writing and performance skills to structure a short stand up set, and give participants an insight into the industry. The goal of the course is to create your own 3.5 minute set which you will perform, at the end of term, in front of a live and supportive audience. The course will be made up of 15 participants who will be selected by the team and placed onto the course with a funded bursary.
The Comedy Lab Stand-Up group will meet weekly on Saturdays (2.5 hours) and will be a mixture of online and in person. Led by Gemma Leader, classes will start on Saturday 5th June until Saturday 31st July. There will also be guest facillitators, including Susan Murray from Red Imp Comedy Club. On Saturday 31st July we will hold a public sharing at Fellowship Square, where you’ll be able to showcase what you’ve learned over the course in a safe environment, at our very own Soho Theatre event. We ask that participants commit to attending all 9 weeks and are 18 years or older at the start of the course.
