How do you write a play that makes the Verity Bargate Award shortlist 2015 shortlisted-writers Phoebe Eclair-Powell and Theresa Ikoko share their favourite exercises and advice for writers who are starting out.
Phoebe Eclair-Powell is a writer from South East London. In 2015 Phoebe’s debut play WINK at Theatre 503 received rave reviews and four Off West End Nominations including ‘Most Promising New Playwright’. Her latest play, Fury, was runner up for the Verity Bargate Award 2015, and subsequently won the Soho Young Writer’s Award and had its run extended at Soho theatre due to popular demand. Off the back of this success, Phoebe became Soho Theatre’s Channel 4 Playwright in Residence 2016/2017.
Theresa Ikoko enjoyed a hugely successful five week season in our theatre with her play Girls, co-produced by Soho Theatre, HighTide and Talawa Theatre Company. The play won her the Alfred Fagon Award 2015, George Devine award 2016 and was shortlisted, with judges commendation, for Verity Bargate Award 2015. She is currently under commission and in residence at Soho Theatre as part of the Soho Six programme.
