All the way from India, Aditi’s Edinburgh debut explores how her place in our global village makes her feel she belongs nowhere and everywhere at the same time.
This is a show about all of us. But mainly about Bourgeois & Maurice.

A lot can change in 10 years. 2007 was the year that Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone, Barack Obama announced his plans for Presidency, Tony Blair departed 10 Downing Street and, most importantly of all, Georgeois Bourgeois and Maurice Maurice were born.

This August B&M look back over a decade of social change in a musical retro-speculative that is part-fact, part-fiction and part-self indulgence. Picking highlights from their four albums of musical satire and social commentary, they attempt to make sense of a decade of rapid change, and work out whether they could, in fact, be to blame for it all?

Blending the line between contemporary cabaret, alternative comedy and prancing around in sequins, Bourgeois & Maurice have established themselves as one of the UK’s most subversive and innovative musical acts.
Our SYC Comedy Lab and Writers’ Lab artists have been busy creating new work for the fringe. Keep your eyes peeled for our young artists and their 51 shows, tearing up Edinburgh this summer!

theatre

Half Breed

By Natasha Marshall
Soho Theatre & Talawa Theatre Company Presents
3-27 Aug
Assembly George Square Theatre
12.20pm
Tickets

‘I am that mixed raced kid, like 50/50, on the fence, lukewarm, in-between maybe. Trust me, around here I’m about as black as it goes…’ Jazmin feels different. She doesn’t want to stay in the village. She doesn’t want to have a baby. She doesn’t want to laugh at racist jokes in the local pub. She’s got to get out. A partly autobiographical dark comedy about finding your voice. Written and performed by Alfred Fagon Award shortlisted writer Natasha Marshall.

Dust

By Milly Thomas
3-27 Aug
Big Belly
Underbelly, Cowgate
4.40pm
Tickets

‘I’ve been dead for three days.’ A woman. A suicide. A choice. A fly on the wall. A funeral. A Bakewell tart. A life. A lie. A truth. An ending. Of sorts. Life, Alice thinks, isn’t worth living. So, Alice kills herself. Sort of. Forced to watch the aftermath of her suicide and its ripple effect on her family and friends, Alice quickly learns that death changes people. And that death isn’t the change she hoped for. Writer and performer Milly Thomas is a devout pessimist and chronic oversharer. Credits include Clique (BBC3), Clickbait and A First World Problem.

Brutal Cessation

By Milly Thomas
3-27 Aug
The Assembly Rooms
4.40pm (60 mins)
Tickets

‘I have fantasies… I lead you to a table… and I hurt you.’ A relationship. A relationship rotting. Purgatory. Is having no reason to stay a reason to leave? At what point does the abuser become the abused? And why aren’t we more afraid of women? Two actors, one couple, swapping roles. A savage new play by Milly Thomas (Clique BBC3, Clickbait and A First World Problem, Theatre503) exploring violence in relationships, our expectations of gender and what happens when we’re no longer in love but refuse to let go.

Cathy

By Cardboard Citizens
2-26 Aug
Pleasance Dome
3:30pm
Tickets

Following a hugely successful UK tour, Cardboard Citizens’ powerful four-star play hits the Edinburgh Festival. Inspired by Ken Loach’s groundbreaking film, Cathy Come Home, Ali Taylor’s timely new drama imagines a Cathy for the modern age, bringing to life the impact of spiralling housing costs, gentrification and the challenges of forced relocation. Coming to the festival for the first time in its 25th anniversary year, Cardboard Citizens will use its trademark style to give audiences the chance to join the debate as to how society should be tackling these issues. ★★★★(Stage). ★★★★(TheUpcoming.co.uk). ★★★★(TheReviewsHub.com). cardboardcitizens.org.uk/cathyedinburgh

Mission Abort

By Therese Ramstedt
2-13, 15-28 Aug
Guilded Balloon at Rose Theatre
5:45pm
Tickets

Pain! Shame! Confusion! Or… empowering freedom and a massive relief? Strong opinions on abortion legislation are voiced on a daily basis; Mission Abort crushes taboos by exploring a woman’s perspective on the actual experience – from discovering she is pregnant, to making the decision, following it through and getting on with life afterwards. This explosive one-woman play invites the audience along for a laugh-cry rollercoaster ride – featuring questionable life-modelling skills, the looming voice of Donald Trump and leg-dancing to Kate Bush. Asking the big question: how can a choice that is so right be so hard?

Monster

By Joe Sellman-Leava
2-28th Aug
Pleasance Courtyard
3.15pm
Tickets

‘This is a story about a boy, and a girl.
Fairy tale-teller extraordinaire, Ben Haggarty, brings us a night of old skool storytelling! This mash-up of Scots tinker and Romanian gypsy fairy tales, comes complete with boys becoming men; men becoming women; the darkest of arts; inescapable destiny, and a baby sister who isn’t quite what anyone expected…

These are some of the first fairy tales Ben Haggarty ever told. Tough, beautiful and filled with magic, they’ll take you about as high as you can go….to about as low as you can go….and make way for something a bit more difficult than ‘happy ever after.’

BEN HAGGARTY: Having been trained in mime, and in theatre direction at East 15, and apprenticed as an image-maker with Welfare State, Ben is one of the world’s leading contemporary storytellers, renowned for his passionate and physical performances. He tours widely, has been a guest artist in over one hundred International Storytelling Festivals in 25 countries and was for 10 years the official storyteller with Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. Ben is a much sought after teacher and director of storytellers and artistic director of the legendary Crick Crack Club.
After selling out an often-extended Off-Broadway run, Australian tour and London run at Soho Theatre, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon heads out across the UK with The Vaudevillians, a bawdy, rowdy musical comedy co-starring composer and musician Major Scales.

Throughout the 1920’s Kitty Witless and Dr. Dan Von Dandy toured the United States as The Vaudevillians, wowing audiences with their edgy, original music. One day, while touring through Antarctica, they were victims of a devastating avalanche and were buried under two tons of sleet and snow – instantly freezing them alive. But thanks to Global Warming, they recently thawed out only to discover that pop artists had stolen their music and passed it off as their own. Now, at long last, they are taking to the stage to reclaim their songs, performing their music as originally composed. It’s a vintage cabaret with a twist of drag.

Liverpool Homotopia, Unity Theatre
Fri 3 Nov
Book Now

Pavilion Arts Centre, Buxton
Sat 4 Nov
Book Now

Gatehouse,Stafford
Sun 5 Nov
Book Now

Gala Theatre, Durham
Mon 6 Nov
Book Now

Northern Stage, Newcastle
Tue 7 Nov
Book Now

Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough
Wed 8 Nov
Book Now

Westlands Entertainment & Conference Centre, Yeovil
Tues 14 Nov
Book Now

Northcote Theatre, Exeter
Wed 15 Nov
Book Now

Sherman Theatre, Cardiff
Thurs 16 Nov
Book Now

Komedia, Bath
Fri 17 Nov
Book Now

Junction, Cambridge
Tues 21 Nov
Book Now

Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, Maidenhead
Thurs 23 Nov
Book Now

Y Theatre, Leicester
Sat 25 Nov
Book Now

Colchester Arts Centre
Tues 28 Nov
Book Now

The Old Market, Brighton
Thurs 30 Nov – Fri 1 Dec
Book Now

The Glee Club, Nottingham
Tues 5 Dec
Book Now

Contact Theatre, Manchester
Thurs 7 – Sat 9 Dec
Book Now
