Soho Theatre and Akbar Kurtha present
baghdad wedding
by Hassan Abdulrazzak
directed by Lisa Goldman
28 June - 21 July 2007

'In Iraq, a wedding is not a wedding unless shots get fired. It's like in England where a wedding is not a wedding unless someone pukes or tries to f**k one of the bridesmaids. That's just the way it goes.'

Against a backdrop of London and war-torn Baghdad, three friends grapple with their sexual, cultural and political identity.

This is a surprising first play from Iraqi writer, Hassan Abdulrazzak, directed by Soho's Artistic Director Lisa Goldman.

Praise for Baghdad Wedding:

'The Prime Minister and his cabinet should take a brief course in political illumination. They should go to see Baghdad Wedding. Hot theatre.'
**** Nicholas de Jongh, Evening Standard

'A highly arresting debut… Lisa Goldman's vibrant, well-judged production feels well timed and salutary.'
**** Paul Taylor, The Independent

'Lisa Goldman’s production fizzes with energy... We’ve heard all about the agonies of Baghdad before... but here’s a play that will make you see and feel it afresh.'
**** Benedict Nightingale, The Times

'Exhilarating... The dialogue is quick, sardonic, full of character... Lisa Goldman, the new artistic head of the theatre, directs with flair: it's a flying start to regime change at Soho.'
Susannah Clapp, The Observer

'A thrilling experience.'
Aleks Sierz, The Stage

'In less than two hours, Abdulrazzak not only covers an enormous amount of territory, he also reminds us of the infinite human contradictions within any nation.'
Michael Billington, The Guardian
