Soho Theatre meets... Phil Wang

Mon 5 January 2015

Hi, nice to meet you! What’s your name?
Hey man. The name’s Phil. Last name, Wang. So Phil Wang I guess. I am a stand-up comedian. I talk mainly about race and sex stuff but in a clever way with wordplay and classical references. It’s for everyone, is what I’m trying to say.

Where are you from?
I grew up in Malaysia, where my dad is from. But I live in London now.

What brings you here?
Last August I performed my second solo show ‘Mellow Yellow’ at the Edinburgh Fringe. I’m really looking forward to performing it here at the Soho Theatre. Mainly because the beer here is so nice.

Sorry, didn’t get you a drink, what would you like?
Oh just a water please.

Some crisps or nuts?
Yes. Honey roasted crisps and prawn cocktail nuts please.

So, what’s so special about your show?
My show is unique in that it is currently the only stand-up show in the world being performed by me. I talk about being Chinese-y and there’s some stuff about girls. I mess about with a loop-pedal as well so that’s something to look forward to.

How did the idea of the show come about?
I’m trying to figure out what kind of comedian I want to be, so I spend most of the show testing out different genres, working towards one I think I suit best. The one characteristic of mine that keeps getting told to me is that I’m laid back on stage. Hence the title. The rest is still up for debate.

Do you come here often?
I have never performed a solo show here before but I’ve been here a bunch of times to watch shows. Some of those were very good. And again there’s the beer. This water is delicious by the way.

Where are you going after here…?
I’m going to Melbourne next month to perform at the comedy festival there. You can come if you like. Tonight, however, I’m probably going to KFC. You may not come to that.

Get to know Phil Wang a little bit better at his show in February, and maybe you can get to KFC with him one day. Maybe.
